Unformatted text preview: Physics 8A Summer 2007 Midterm l 1. (1 pt) Write your discussion section number on the front page of your exam booklet. 2. (15 pts) A ball is thrown into the air. When it is at a height of 35.0 m above the ground, the ball is traveling at a speed of 25.0 m/s at an angle of 15° above the horizontal. (a) How fast was it initially thrown, and at what angle above the horizontal? (b) How long does it take to reach a height of 35 .0 m above the ground after being launched? (c) At that point, how far is it horizontally from its initial launch point? 3. (14 pts) A 5.0 kg block is sitting on an inclined plane, 20° above the horizontal. A coefficient of static friction of 0.50 exists between the surfaces, and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.30. If someone were to exert a force on the block parallel to the incline, what minimum force would be needed to get the block moving up the incline? Once the block began moving, what would be its acceleration? 4. (10 pts) A boy attaches one end of a string to his toy battery-powered car, which moves at a speed of 0.75 m/s. The car has a mass of 0.40 kg. He starts the car up, and makes it travel in a circle of radius 1.50 m by C m. 4—,» fiv‘t‘ r holding onto the other end of the string. The string are u ,, x 1, 97 makes an angle of 20° with the horizontal. If the tension in the string is 0.10 N, what must be the frictional force between the ground and the wheels of the car? n. a c .‘f‘cl < 5. (10 pts) Three blocks are being pulled by a string, as shown below. Block A has a mass of 2.0 kg, block C a mass of 3.0 kg, rope I has a tension of 6.0 N, and rope 3 (the string pulling all of the blocks) has a tension of 18.0 N. Find (a) the acceleration of the blocks, (b) the mass of block B, and (c) the tension in rope 2. R‘V‘ Raft ROI?" pkiJ‘MJ l fo‘u‘l‘zunf 2. (“andL 4* Lam/k Veil V07?
