This shows their strong belief of high quality for their Emperor which they had before the Century of Humiliation. The Century of Humiliation was led by numerous factors including the Taiping Rebellion, the ‘rice bowl’ viewpoint of China, World War 1 which led to the displacement of Chinese cultures and the first Opium War of 1839. The 1937 war with Japan led to massive social disorder. This also caused a severe economic strain in Eastern and Southern China (Ebrey 407). The major events that caused China to be humiliated for over 109 years during the Century of Humiliation include Unequal Treaties such as the Treaty of Nanking and the Opium Wars. In regard to the China’s humiliation framework, China experienced major historical vents of which some fits to this frame work such as severe economic strain; while others do not fit well into this framework such as regulation of trade on certain commodities. In the 19th century, the British government enjoyed high profits from the trade of importing opium from China to Britain. However, these trading rights were cut when the Chinese authorities banned this trade. Unluckily the British went ahead to import opium even though it was illegal because they believed they were superior and deserved importing opium.
