Kimi Schoepflin Mrs. Kerrigan AP Literature and Composition 11 September, 2019 Point of View a Passage from Johnny Got His Gun In this passage from Dalton Trumbo’s novelJohnny Got His Gunthe strong relationship between a boy and his father is emphasized. As the father and the son are on their annual camping and fishing trip, the son faces a dilemma about his loyalty to tradition and his father. Through the use of selection of detail and a third person point of viewTrumbo is able to very effectively characterize the loving and deep relationship between a father and son. The first literary technique used by Trumbo is selection of detail. The first example of this is after the son, Joe, tells his father he wants to go fishing with Bill the next day. His father tells him to go with Bill, but also tells his son that he can use his fishing rod. This is very meaningful gesture to the son, and the selection of detail in this part of the passage gives the audience insight into just how strong their father son relationship is.
