Refers to the number of steps is needed to get back to plants. 1 st Trophic level Producers-use direct sun energy Autotrophs-create food from inorganic substances Green plants, algae, phytoplankton 2 nd Trophic level Primary consumers-herbivores Heterotrophs-consumes 1 st trophic level organisms Deer, elk, moose, rabbits 3 rd Trophic level Carnivores and omnivores Consumes 1 st and 2 nd tropic level Fox 4 th Trophic level Carnivores that consume other carnivores Consume 3 rd or 4 th level organisms Eagle 5 th trophic level Top carnivores (apex predators)
