Liang 1 Irene Liang Italian Studies R5B 29 January 2019 Free-writing: Death in Venice Death in Venice is expertly crafted as it is filled with a combination of hidden meaning and Greek mythology. It also incorporated the social and political economy at that time, such as the cholera epidemic and the decay of Germany. It is also a novella that certainly sparks confusion from the audiences as it has a very unusual plot where a 50 year old man falls in love with a young boy. It is peculiar, or even illegal to follow an underage child and it was shocking to see that a noble writer of public importance would abandon his dignity and moral standards in order to pursue a young boy in a foreign country. Perhaps, this might be a lesson to the readers to not extendedly suppress one’s emotions as they will inevitably rise up and erupt. The novella reminds me of Campbell’s The Hero’s Journey where the plot starts out in the ordinary world
