The article Recentering Globalism: Popular Culture and Japanese Transnationalism by Koichi Iwabuchi is an exploration of the impact of Japanese post-war popular culture on a modern global interface. The article surveys how a Japanese post-war reconstruction era economy sought to refocus their resources towards the development of highly marketable consumer goods and whether or not the success of these products can or cannot be assigned to an attribute of cultural odourlessness. Iwabuchi explains the desire for Japanese commodities to be made “odourless” or without “[an embedded] expression of race, ethnicity, or culture,” as this allows for higher marketability. However, he also prospects whether it is or isn’t possible for a cultural commodity to be truly “odourless.” He explains his point by comparing the phenomena of “Japanization” to the more prevalent “Americanization” of global popular culture.
