Psychology Exam 2 Review Basic Principles of Sensation (ch. 5): o Light, sound, pressure, taste Threshold (ch. 5): o Absolute: minimum stimulation needed to detect a particular stimulus (50% of the time) o Difference: minimum difference between 2 stimuli that a subject can detect 50% of the time o Below absolute is “subliminal”; Weber’s Law is to perceive a different proportion, proportion must be a constant Sensation (ch. 5): o A process by which our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimulus energy Perception (ch. 5): o A process of organizing and interpreting sensory information, thus enabling us to recognize meaning for objects and events Pupil (ch. 5): o Adjustable opening in center of eye Iris (ch. 5): o A ring of muscle that forms the colored portion of the eye around the pupil and controls the size of the pupil opening Lens (ch.5): o Transparent structure behind pupil that changes shape to focus images on the retina Retina (ch. 5): o Inner surface of eye o Light sensitive o Contains rods and cones o Layers of neurons o Beginning of visual information processing Top-down Processing (ch. 5): o Information processing guided by higher level mental processes Bottom-up Processing (ch. 5): o Analysis that begins w/the sense receptors and works up to the brains integration of sensory information Pitch (ch. 5): o A tones highness or lowness o Depends on frequency Never Deafness (ch. 5): o Hearing loss caused by damage to the mechanical system that conducts sounds waves to the cochlea Conduction Deafness (ch. 5):
