Finn Lundy Psychology of Prejudice Andrew Stewart 9/24/2016 Donald Trump Embraces Wider Use of Stop-and-Frisk by Police: It’s implications in relation to Devine’s 1989 study, Stereotypes and Prejudice: Their Automatic and Controlled Components Donald Trump made headlines this past Wednesday with his call for the broad use of the controversial stop-and-frisk policing strategy throughout American cities. His support for the polarizing policing policy which involves officer’s stopping, questioning and searching pedestrians collides with public opinions of African Americans who have been disproportionately singled by this policing tactic. Worse yet, it comes at a time when police shootings have once again taken the national spotlight. We must look for explanations for why blacks are being disproportionately singled by police throughout this country. One such answer comes from Devine’s 1989 study, which postulated that stereotypes are stimulated automatically rather than upon exposure to a member of a stereotyped group or symbolic equivalent, irrespective of one's conscious intentions, beliefs, or prejudice.
