Paul Sanders English 103H-Section 007 Mrs. Spallholz Essay 2 10/4/07 Restrictions and Rebellion in “the Awakening” Kate Chopin, the author of the Awakening , was born and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri during the mid-19 th century. Growing up in Missouri during the 19 th century was a huge influence on the Awakening , as she grew up in a different society than that of today, one where the women held a very restricted role in life. Women of the time were mostly limited to the household and rarely did anything but take care of the family. This is reflected in Kate’s protagonist in the Awakening , Edna, who is a woman struggling with the restrictions placed on her by the society she lives in. Throughout the novel, Edna is slowly awakening to a higher understanding of life and a realization that she is not truly free as she is being confined by the expectations of a woman in her society. She is encouraged towards this realization by a woman named Madamoiselle Reisz, who is very similar to Edna. With this insight, Edna is subconsciously destroying the relationships and responsibilities that have bound her in her life. She is seeking a new way of life, one free of the restraints of being a woman in her society. In Kate Chopin’s the Awakening , Edna is being suffocated by the unforgiving restrictions placed on her by her marriage and motherhood. With the encouragement from Reisz, Edna eventually
