Running head: MAYAN EMPIRE 2 Mayan Empire The Mayan Empire lasted from 1800 B.C. to 900 A.D and was the first major, complex civilization to develop in the Americas. The Mayans were skilled in the areas of science, mathematics, agriculture, and architect. The Mayans were very advanced as a society, although being divided amongst states with different rulers. The rise of the Mayans was the result of years of advancement and expertise in many areas. However, the decline of the Mayans remains a mystery. Early Mayan settlements began during the Preclassic Period. The Mayans were primarily focused on agricultural advancement and construction, along with inscribing stone monuments. The farmers were experts at cultivating the land, which brought on a dependable harvest and varied diet, enabling economic growth. Methods of irrigation and terracing were used by Mayan farmers. This helped the Mayans flourish with a substantial number of crops and food supply.
