It is important that in the formation of an e-commerce business, we take privacy into consideration because of how important it has proven to be to people individually and society as a whole. The Internet has become a central hub for businesses and individuals alike, but it is particularly concerning for consumers who have expressed their dissatisfaction with the way their personal information is mishandled. It is generally accepted that people have rights when it comes to their information being online- between giving them the control to alter/delete their data, knowing when their data is being collected in the first place, not allowing for secret systems of information transference, and knowing that their information is stored in a secure manner. The Federal Trade Commission’s Fair Information Practice Principle was passed in 2000 is one of the rules surrounding privacy, with the understanding that a lack of privacy is also an attack on people’s free speech (Laudon, 2018).
