Will Hare January 28, 2007 ENG101 – Academic Writing Professor Byars-Nichols College English: A Whole New Ballgame In Jolliffe and Mulvaney’s essay “Differences Between College and High School Writing”, the authors contend that the differences between college English classes and high school English are vast and thus must be addressed. The four main differences they point out include “the expected level of quality, the variation in types and frequency of writing, the difference in instructional detail, and the disparity between an ‘assignment’ and a ‘project’.” (15) Although I tend to agree with them on most points, there are a few issues I must address the few discrepancies I have with their essay. I will be concurring with them on the point regarding “the variation in types and frequency of writing”, while disagreeing with them when they address “the expected level of quality” and “the difference in instructional detail” (15-16). Jolliffe and Mulvaney point out that once in college, the types of papers you write and the sheer number of assignments is completely different from what one experiences in high school. (15) Both authors contend that you will find yourself facing multiple writing assignments spread out across all the different classes one is taking instead of only having writing assignments in English like in high school. They go on to basically point out that college classes are five times as demanding as your high school writing classes because it is not just one class that requires
