Juan Martinez Mr. Erslovas Honors English 10 13 March 2018 Elements of Fiction: Oedipus Rex Plot: I. Summary: Oedipus Rex In the city of Thebes, Greece, a plague had struck. The citizens went to the palace to talk to the king. The king, Oedipus, replied that he sent Creon so that he can find the killer of predecessor to stop the plague. Creon then comes to the palace and he brought a message. The message was that the plague will end once they find who killed and murdered Laius and he/ she will be banished from the city. Oedipus begins to question Creon and then he promises that he will solve the mystery of Laius’s death. Oedipus calls the blind prophet, Tiresias, for the truth, but he refused at first. The Prophet said Oedipus killed the king and had married his mother, Jocasta. He didn’t believe one single word the prophet said and then he begins to accuse Creon of setting him up for power. After that, the prophet tells about his parents and that was when Oedipus was alarmed and asks him how he knows his parents. Jocasta enters and questions about the situation. Oedipus tells her that the prophet tells him that he killed Laius. Jocasta tries to quell his rage and fear, telling him of prophecy and that everything is false. Jocasta tells him that Laius was murdered by a band of thieves. Oedipus asks to Jocasta for descriptions of the crossroads and murder site. The descriptions of King Laius seemed familiar to Oedipus and he was shocked and told her what if he killed him. He talks about the day that he traveled to Thebes. He was harassed by a group of thieves, so he defending himself and killed someone. He sends a man to find the shepherd to find prove that he is innocent. A messenger then comes to the palace and tells Oedipus that Polybus is dead and he should rule over there in Corinth. Jocasta convince Polybus”s death from natural causes
which proves that Oedipus didn’t kill his father. The messenger tells him that he was an orphan and that Polybus and his wife are not his parents. Oedipus then tells the messenger to bring the shepherd. Jocasta realizes that she is in a situation and begs Oedipus to not find any information anymore. The shepherd comes and tells that Oedipus is the son of Laius. Oedipus finds the truth and goes crazy. A second messenger comes in telling that Jocasta has hung herself. Oedipus scratches his eyes out and banishes himself.
