Week One Assignments 1. In a minimum 200 words discuss the different approaches of the federal government toward the Plains Indians. Ans: During 1800s, the federal government controlled by the European settlers was in a domestic war with the native Indians. This first started in late 1500s when British and Spanish settlers first invaded the land of America. The settlers’ attempts to colonize the country pushed the Indians towards the west coast. The settlers soon started their government and started moving towards west when their population grew. This created a lot of tension amongst the Indians as the White Americans wanted them to give up on their nomadic culture and “colonize”. Although, all the government and White Americans really wanted was to get the land Indians rightfully owned. The armies sent by the government started massacring Indian men and kicking them out of their homes. Even though President Ulysses S Grant made a “peace policy” in 1869, the warfare soon resumed.
