EALC 350g Birge Fall 2007 Questions for Discussion 2 Pre-history, Shang, and Chou (Zhou) 1. How does archeological evidence confirm or not confirm the traditional view from written records of the development of early Chinese civilization? 2. What features of Shang and Chou society presage features of later Chinese civilization? Ancestors. The use of oracle bone divination in the shang dynasty aided in the development of rituals to honor ancestors for future generations. In the zhou society, ancestoral ceremonies were still important because of this ritualistic influence. Confucius wrote about honoring one’s ancestors as an act of filial piety and praised the kings of the shang dynasty for their implimentation of ancestory worship. 3. What is the role and significance of ancestor worship in early China? The role of ancestor worship in early china was for protection and honor. Some of the ceremonies done by the shang dynasty kings were oracle bone divinations and human sacrifices. Doing such a task of such high importance was the reason for the king’s direct involvement.
