Elections through Video Video 1: If Canada had Proportional Representation - This week’s videos and supplementary content will illustrate how the current system of first-past-the-post differs with proportional representation. The first video is especially significant as Dave Meslin translates the results from the last elections (which used the current system of first-past-the-post) to a possible outcome that might apply if Canada adopts proportional representation. Using this analogy, do you think that Canada is ready to embrace a more proportional system of voting? Video 2: At Issue- Electoral Reform - This unit discusses the various issues related to present day electoral reform in Canada. One of Justin Trudeau’s first promises during his campaign was to start the process of electoral reform rolling, however, that has since stalled (as of 2017). Why is electoral reform a huge challenge? Are Canadians against or for reforming the way we vote? Is the current system democratic? These are just some of the questions that many Canadians have in regard to changing voting procedures. Discussions surrounding democracy creates a setback when addressing these challenges. Advocates for changing the electoral system feel that the current system produces too many wasted votes and underrepresents many non-territorial parties such as the NDP and Green Party. It is also a format that produces a two-party system in a system that clearly has established minor parties which are underrepresented in elections. As a follow up to this video, you may also read The true test of Trudeau’s new politics? Electoral reform .
