The mad Dr. Frankenstein in his laboratory with Igor at his side, creating his monster. A chemist peering into a frothing test tube shouting "I've done it! I've found the answer!" A bespeckled German physicist calmly working on equations that will permit humans to fly to the stars. C 6 H 12 O 6 . A biologist looking into a microscope, watching tiny animals swim by. A lab worker that examines a few fibers and catches a murderer. All of these are part of the popular notion of what science is. As with many popular ideas, embellished by Hollywood, VH1, and science fiction novels, it is based partly in truth and mostly on misunderstanding. What, then, is science, really? Why is biology considered to be a science? Science and the Scientific Method What is science? A common perception is that science is a body of hard-to-understand knowledge. Actually, it is not that difficult to understand with a little study and reflection! The body of knowledge in science is, in reality, almost a sideline to the real story about what science is. In fact, science is more of a process than a collection of facts. Science is a system for study of the natural universe. Science seeks to learn objective truth about the material world. As a process, it has certain set assumptions and rules. Science is rather rigid about how data are gathered, using methods that collectively are called The Scientific Method . In this lab we will focus on the way in which scientific observations are made, data are gathered, and interpretations of the data are formulated. The Scientific Method generally proceeds in a series of steps: Step 1. An observation is made or several observations are made. This can lead to a question being formulated or be in response to a question about the natural world.
