The first officer on the spacecraft measures that the searchlight is on for a time t B . Event 1 : Light comes on, at a particular location. Event 2 : Light goes off, at a particular location. If the locations are the same , the time interval is the proper time , t 0 . In all other frames, the time interval is longer : t = γ t 0 Which time is shorter ? In the spaceship frame, the light comes on and goes off at the same place. So t B is the proper time. Therefore t B < t A . (A)
