Hugh Hefner, Playboy Founder, Dead at 83 LAS VEGAS, Nev. April 10—Hugh Hefner, who not only founded and published the Playboy magazine empire but also changed the sexual thinking of America, died Thursday night on his eighty-third birthday. Hefner’s birthday party was one of his most elaborate yet, but it certainly didn’t end the way anyone expected. Hefner celebrated his birthday at the Palms Resort and Casino surrounded by girlfriends past and present as well as a plethora of beautiful playmates. Hefner was in the pool with his eighteen- year-old twin girlfriends when he suddenly became unresponsive. EMS responded almost immediately however Hefner’s heart had already stopped. The heart failure is believed to be a result of the combination of male-enhancement drugs, energy drinks, and alcohol in Hefner’s system. It is unclear whether or not the incident is related to Hefner’s minor 1985 stroke. The incident was certainly unexpected for Hefner as he was quoted in 2006 telling reporters, “I truly believe that age -- if you're healthy -- age is just a number.”

Hefner irrefutably left his mark on America. Hugh Hefner took sex from a taboo topic in 1953 to a celebrated topic. Hefner was quoted saying, “If you had to sum up the idea of Playboy , it is anti-Puritanism. Not just in regard to sex, but the whole range of play and pleasure." Hefner’s accomplishments with the Playboy empire have been admired by many and Hefner was always ready to defend the criticism. Hefner defended the openness of sexuality as “bringing rationality to sexuality -- because when you don't embrace sexuality in a normal way, you get the twisted kinds, and the kinds that destroy lives.” After international success and the “sexual revolution” of the 1960s, Hefner opened nightclubs,
