3. I a) Taiwen succeeded to induce the Singer Corporation to invest and train local firms to supply the parts it uses. This strengthened the entire sewing machine industry for export and by 1999, Singer has left all fabrication for local firms. Plethora of operations in garment making, such as cutting, sewing, etc. were carried out by proliferating mini- firms in Taiwen to accommodate U.S. market demand for various types of clothing. b) The 4000 workers trained by the German camera firm Rollei made Singapore the hard disk driver center of the world. Singapore attracted foreigners to produce hard disk drives there, by the “pre-electronic’ skill of its workers in precision machining, such as the 4000 trained by the failed Rollei. c) The recalcitrant protection of the import substitution industries have made the Export Processing Zone industries an enclave, in sharp contrast to Malaysia where backward linkages have spread the prosperity of the electronics sector in the export zone of Bayan
