4/28/09 notes Eliza o hours tomorrow 12-1:30 Black Death 1/3 of population dead by 1351 ish o Massive drop in labor force and increase in land up for grabs Not much happened in the years immediately following black death o Class status quo messed up because land was suddenly available to peasants o Justice and power attempted to be enforced from the center o Lords go against this, using their position to lobby for their own interest and against others in the struggling economy Serfdom o Everybody was born free? o Serfdom must have always been resentful, people wanted to work their own lands What compelled them to work on the lords instead? o Early 14 th century, most lived in villages Even if they were reasonably wealthy for village standards serfs were resentful. Couple cant get married if one is free and one is unfree. Sex o Prima Noctus- myth If a serf wants to marry off daughter or sister, must ask permission from the lord Lord then has right to her vag the first night
