Abram Balloga PHYS 1203 TA: Mark Transtrum- mkt26 Paper Topic 3/12/2009 Discovery description; Water on Mars! Water once existed on the surface of mars. Even though it cannot exist for any significant duration nowadays due to the surface and atmospheric conditions on the red planet, there is conclusive information pointing to its historical presence; river and lake beds, polar ice caps similar to on earth, and visible erosion caused by flowing liquid. There are many clear pictures available of the surface of Mars, some of them show geological. Looking at pictures closely and, following curiosity, scientific principles, knowledge about features on the Martian surface, and principles of planetary geology, such clues might be brought to light. Significance of Discovery The importance of this discovery could be very real as water is a crucial substance necessary to support life. If rivers and oceans once covered a large part of Mars’ surface, then the scientific community could very well discover signs of life in these ancient sites. The existence of water in several
