Electronic Structure Knowing the locations of electrons in an atom is important in determining the behavior of the atom. Electrons are arranged in shells or energy levels designated as 1, 2, 3, etc. The 1 st row is energy level 1, 2 nd row is the energy level 2, etc. Within each energy level, the electrons are arranged in subshells , or sublevels . The 1 st energy level has only one sublevel, designated as the s sublevel. Electrons in the 2 nd energy level are arranged in two sublevels designated as s and p . 3 rd energy levels, s, p, and d. The 4 th energy, s, p, d, and f . Each sublevel is divided further into orbitals . An orbital can contain up to two electrons. Sublevel Orbitals Electrons S 1 2 P 3 6 D 5 10 F 7 14 Noting some exceptions: 1) 3d sublevel fills after the 4s sublevel 2) 4f sublevel fills after the 6s sublevel Here is the Order: 1s, 2s, 2p, 3s, 3p, 4s, 3d, 4p, 5s, 4d, 5p, 6s, 4f, 5d, 6p, 7s, 5f, 6d, 7p…. With this order, the Electron Configuration can be determined. Examples: (Phosphorus atomic #15) P: 1s 2 2s 2 2p 6 3s 2 3p 3 (Ruthenium atomic # 44) Ru: 1s 2 2s 2 2p 6 3s 2 3p 6 4s 2 3d 10 4p 6 5s 2 4d 6 (Calcium atomic # 20) Ca: 1s 2 2s 2 2p 6 3s 2 3p 6 4s 2 To save time and space, a short cut may be taken. The Noble Gas Configuration can also be used, using the closest noble gas before the given element and continuing the electron configuration after it. Examples:
