Professional Organizations 2 Abstract There are several reasons that professional organizations benefit teachers today. This paper examines those benefits and other significant reasons for joining professional education associations. The National Education Association (NEA) and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) both offer invaluable resources to teachers. Both organizations foster a common pursuit of excellence and provide unique services to help all teachers be the best that they can be.

Professional Organizations 3 Professional Organizations that Benefit the Teachers of Today’s Society Professional organizations are not unique to careers in education. They exist in all types of careers and fields of work to foster a common pursuit of excellence. For example, I know that both of my parents, who work in business related fields, belong to at least one professional organization. Not only do professional organizations foster the common pursuit of excellence, but they also create a network of allies. These “allies” are not only friends and colleagues, but they are anyone engaged in a particular profession who seeks to further that profession. Because a professional organization brings many people together who share a particular interest and/or goal, one could argue that these organizations also foster a sense of belonging and importance of one’s profession in today’s society. For these reasons, professional organizations are important in our ever-changing and ever-advancing society. Professional organizations will benefit anyone considering a career in education because of the services they provide teachers, the abilities to connect easily with other professionals, and helping one to understand any and all issues facing one’s field. “On a summer afternoon in 1857, 43 educators gathered in Philadelphia, answering a
