LRE = Least Restrictive Environment = placement o general education classroom o general education classroom with supplemental support o part time SPE class o full time SPE class o special environments residential, private, catholic schools, etc. . o homebound o hospital/in-patient programs o students requiring SPE services are placed in their individual LRE sometimes students with the same disability have different LREs general education classroom should be the first option 12 categories of SPE = just like 12 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS REASONS fro SPE: poverty #1 o 18% of kids live in poverty (imagine that effect on their environment) o 1/5 kids is poor in the first 3 years of life … this is significant because the first 3 years of life make up the time for the greatest brain development o an American child is born every minute without health insurance o lack of healthcare during pregnancy o the higher the poverty, the more children (can’t afford birth control, etc…) at-risk behaviors o parents use drugs, etc… o individual lives in setting that put them at risk for the need of SPE discrimination/intolerance politics BOYS vs. GIRLS: Boys o behind in verbal skills o if they have trouble reading, they are 2x as likely to be diagnosed with LD o 4x more likely to be put on ADD or ADHD medication o learn more by doing aggressive o more boys drop out (Baraka Boys)… fear of failure Girls o higher success in education achieve higher degrees Major Areas of HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: problem in one area will affect the others sets the foundation of who we are today NORMAL o motor o perceptual o conceptual o communication o social – emotional (ability to deal with the environment) SPECIAL EDUCATION = individually designed instruction and experiences that meet the needs of exceptional learners INDIVIDUAL different for all students (IEP) goals to get in and get out; appropriately applied differentiated instruction assessments is very important (majority of students in SPE test in and can test out later) BASIC CONSTRUCTS of SPE: mastery – oriented (understand one concept before you can move on to the next)
