Alison Claire Burnette Sociology 101 Chapter 13 – Essay 1. In all honesty, I think that divorce can be considered a problem, a solution, and a symptom. First of all, divorce is a huge problem in today’s society. One indication of this is that the divorce rate has risen over the past century. “By 2006, almost four marriages in ten were ending in divorce” (pg. 386). The United States has the highest divorce rate in the world. That is startling! Divorce is also a symptom, however, of all sorts of changes that have taken place in our society within recent history. For example, we live in a society that values individualism. We are “more concerned with our own personal happiness and earning income than about the well-being of families and children” (pg. 386). Also, relationships tend to fail with the fading of sexual passion and romantic interest. Another important change is the fact that women do not depend on men a much or as often. “Women’s increasing participation in the labor force has reduced wives’ financial dependency on their husbands” (pg. 386). Therefore, they are able to leave an unhappy marriage more easily. In addition, “divorce has become socially acceptable” (pg. 386). Lastly, states have made it easier to get a divorce than it was in the past. In fact, divorce has become so easily obtainable that some states have considered “rewriting their marriage laws” (pg. 386). All of these common societal causes of divorce make me think that it is a symptom of what our society has become.
