March 8, 2009 ESS 132 Makeup Sport and Religion Sport is an institution that has been apart of human lifestyle for centuries. From the time of the Gladiators thousands of years ago to the modern day sports such as basketball and football, sports has always been apart of our lives. Sport has been so important over time that it has been compared to the institution of religion. Some people argue that sports are like a form of religion while others say that sports are distinctly different from religion and should not be put into the same category whatsoever. The similarities overlap with one another. Some people argue that sports are closely related to religion. One of the reasons sports are similar to religion is that both have places or buildings for communal gatherings and special events. People attend sports in the same manner that they attend religious gatherings such as church. Both sports and religion also emerge out of a similar quest for perfection in body, mind, and spirit.
