February 18, 2009 ESS 132 Makeup Gender in Sports Throughout much of the history of American sports feminity has been vastly discouraged and women who do participate in organized were for a long time viewed as not being feminine, not exemplifying the ideal female characteristics, and were seen as participating in an avenue of life that was completely male dominated. The vast undertakings of the twentieth century however allowed women to be seen as equals in the eyes of the rest of the members of society. There are many reasons this historical changes occurred. The first factor that increased sport participation among women was new opportunities. Since the late 1970’s many new opportunities have arisen in sports. Prior to the 1970’s teams and programs for women did not exist. Even though women’s participation in sports has increased dramatically over the last few decades, there is still a greater deal of resources spent on male sports as compared to their female counterparts.
