PATRIOT ACT The patriot act is one of the most controversial and possibly one of the most misunderstood laws the congress has ever enacted. The act has been in constant debate in the 21st century America. This act has its own strong points which favor civic liberties and weak points which have a negative effect or influence to civic liberties. The following is an overview of the Act. Much of the Patriot Act was essential and reasonably defensible in itself. Although the act provisions often appear technical, the issues in the Act are not technical. The Act contains some sweeping but ill-advised new powers that undermine both freedom and security. On the positive side, the Act is more protective of the basic liberty than most of its detractors acknowledge. The Act also gives some protection for some civil rights liberties. Some clauses in the Act are of benefit to the immigrant groups and this promotes liberty (Schulhofer, 2005. P. 6).
