Biology 1510 Module #2  Page 1 of 7 Part 1 Lecture: Intro to Ecology September 14, 2007 Ecology     : the study of the interactions of organisms w/their physical and biological  environment o Everything is connected to everything else Major themes o o Behavior o Life history strategies and population dynamics o Interactions btwn individuals and species, community structure o Ecosystem dynamics, biogeochemistry Relationship btwn ecology and evolution o Dobzhansky: “Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution” o Begon et al.: “Very little in evolution makes sense, except in the light of ecology The ecological setting provides the context for selection Dawn of Ecology- o Some understanding of ecology was intrinsic to natural history o oikos : Greek word for “house”;  logos : “study of” o John Graunt (1662)- formalized the study of demography (human pop. Growth  rates), and concluded that human populations were limited o Thomas Malthus (1798) – essay on population growth and its limiting factors  (mainly, food) Recall the importance this paper held for Darwin Ocean-Atmosphere Circulation o The atmosphere-ocean system is a heat engine. Solar energy input density varies with latitude Adiabatic Movement of Air o Adiabatic process     heat content is constant In an adiabatic process, a parcel of air neither gains nor loses heat  through exchange with its surroundings Air heated at the ground rises and expands Expansion work done on the rest of the atmosphere Work done E content of the parcel decreases Decrease in E content temperature decreases The capacity of air to hold moisture varies w/temperature
