POL SCI 1101 Page 1 of 3 Study Guide Part 2 of 5 FINAL EXAM CHAPTER 13 The Presidency The Presidents: Americans want the believe in a powerful president that can do good but they dislike a  concentration of power All presidents must come to the job through two basic routes: elections and impeachment Constitution guarantees a 4-yr term once in office 22 nd  Amendment (1951) limited them to two terms 12 of 42 pres before George W. Bush have actually served two or more full terms For about 10% of america’s history, the presidency has been occupied by someone who  was not elected to the office Impeachment     : political equivalent of an indictment in criminal law, prescribed by the  Constitution. The House of Reps may impeach the president by a majority vote for  “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors” Only two presidents have been impeached by the House o Andrew Johnson (Lincoln’s successor) 1868 – charges stemming from his  disagreement with radical Republicans o Richard Nixon – Watergate Scandal Watergate     : the events and scandal surrounding a break-in at the Democratic National  Committee headquarters in 1972 and the subsequent cover-up of the White House  involvement, leading to the eventual resignation of President Nixon under the threat of  impeachment 25     th     Amendment     : (1967) permits the vice pres to become acting president if both the vice  pres and pres cabinet determine the president is disabled; also outlines how a  recuperated pres can reclaim his job o Created to clarify proceeding after Woodrow Wilson suffered stroke
