IMPAIRED NURSES. 2 Impaired Nurses. Drug and substance abuse occurs across all generations, professions, and all types of occupations. Substance abuse leads to impairment in the workplace, making people unfit to perform their duties; it also leads to vague decisions and conclusions on matters of great importance. Regarding profession, the use of drugs cuts across all the professions from managers to ordinary labor workers. The health sector does not escape the substance abuse (Zickafoose, 2018). Professionals that people have entrusted their life on to abuse drugs. This abuse of drugs leads to impairment, and when it's a nurse's or doctor's impairment we are talking about, it may lead to mistakes in treatment, surgery, drug prescription, and decisions made. An error in the life of a person could lead to loss of that life, and if the health sector is not keen enough, the mistake may go unpunished and unnoticed. Substance abuse is not new to society. But the fact that health professionals also abuse substances is not something that should be assumed. It's an urgent matter that requires immediate action from the concerned authorities. A nurse and an Impaired nurse. A nurse is an individual who is trained to take care of the sick in a hospital or other times they can be found in a doctor’s office. With the changing technology in the field of medicine and the introduction of new machines in hospitals, the technology is supposed to improve the medical care of patients. Therefore, the role of nurses in the medical field is evolving day in day out with the introduction of new technology into the field of medicine ( Worley, 2017). Nurses are becoming more than just bedside professions; they are taking much more significant responsibilities.

IMPAIRED NURSES. 3 However, an impaired nurse may not be in a position to work effectively with the new improvements in technology. The reason behind all this is that the use of drugs and substances impairs the judgment and the decision-making ability of a person. The people need to depend on nurses because of heir reliable and efficient nature in terms of decision making. Impaired nurses do not fall in this category since they are likely to make wrong decisions, which will, in turn, affect the patients. The role of nurses is not just a caregiver anymore; they are communicators, holistic caregivers, instructors, specialists, researchers. Communicator. Nurses transfer information from doctors to patients in terms of treatment, medication, and care. The nurses are the ones to make sure that the patient is collaborating with the medical team to receive adequate treatment. They are supposed to ensure that the patient is positive about all the medications that they take and that the outcome of patient-doctor interaction is a success.
