Company Background and Practical Business Context
UnitedHealth Group, Incorporated (UHG) is a publicly traded company that was founded
in 1977 and headquartered in Minnetonka, Minnesota. The organization is ranked 6 th on the
Fortune 500. UnitedHealth Group, Inc. had reported revenue of $242.16 billion. The company
employs over 320,000 employees in the United States and across multiple countries including
Ireland and Puerto Rico. UHG operates in all 50 states and in 130 countries across the globe
(Fortune, 500). In a recent survey UHG was ranked number one as the most admired company
for the ninth year in a row (Fortune 2019 Survey, 2019).
UnitedHealth Group, Inc. markets insurance products for 3 Lines of business which
include Employer & Individual (E&I), Community & State (C&S) and Medicare & Retirement
(M&R) products. UHG operates via four different segments which include UnitedHealthcare,
OptumHealth, OptumInsight and Optum RxOptum (UnitedHealth Group Inc., 2020).
OptumInsight is the technology hub of the company. They sell technology services to
other sectors including state and federal organizations. UHG invests $3.5 billion toward
technology annually. Pharmacy benefits, supplemental dental and vision products are sold by
UHG (UnitedHealth Group, 2020). The organization also offers alternative routes of care
including walk in clinics inside Walmart and Walgreen retail stores as well as telehealth options
(Haefner, 2019; Japsen, 2019).

set in increments of five with a range from 205 to 305 in dollars (x-axis) (UnitedHealth Group
Inc., 2020).
