Chapter Two Extra Practice Problems 1. Predict the ionic compound formed from the ions of the following elements or polyatomic ions. a. Zn and the sulfate ion ZnSO 4 (from Zn 2+ and SO 4 2- ) b. Cr(III) and the nitrate ion Cr(NO 3 ) 3 (from Cr 3+ and NO 3 - ) c. Ca and the phosphate ion Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (from Ca 2+ and PO 4 3- ) d. Na and S Na 2 S (from Na + and S 2- ) e. Mg and N Mg 2 N 3 (from Mg 2+ and N 3- ) f. Li and P Li 3 P (from Li + and P 3- ) 2. Name each of the compounds formed in Question 1. a. zinc sulfate b. chromium(III) nitrate c. calcium phosphate d. sodium sulfide e. magnesium nitride f. lithium phosphide All of these compounds contain a metal and are thus ionic. Ionic compounds always list the metal first (using it's normal name). Add a Roman numeral if the metal is a transition metal. Parts a-c all contain polyatomic anions, so the name of the ion is simply added behind the name of the metal. Parts d-f all contain monatomic anions, so after the metal is named the name the second element (the
