The role of energy An economy based on industrial production is distinguished, first of all, by requirements of large amounts of energy. In pre-industrialized societies, most energy came from human and animal sources and produced a surplus to support a small number of non-productive workers, like priests, artisans, and government officials. The introduction of new sources of energy allowed for enormous increases in production as well as a lightening of the physical burden of work.
