Writing was not always honored Socrates was against writing, at least as a form of education but probably in general

Socrates gives three reasons why the effects of writing will be disastrous for the youth of Athens . First of all, writing will deprive Athenians of their powerful memories for there will be no need to remember what can be recorded by writing it down. Secondly, writing will change the method of education, replacing the give-and-take of dialectic (dialogue), in which students learn to argue to a simple process of following an argument given in written form. Finally, writing will change the concepts of privacy and public discourse for once something has been written down its author loses control over who sees it.

But he left out the impact on In all these respects, Socrates predicted, writing would be a cultural disaster and one can hardly deny that all his predictions have come true. While Socrates accurately perceived that writing would undermine the oral tradition which he thought the most authentic mode for expressing beautiful poetry and serious ideas, he failed to perceive that writing introduces a new mode of thought most appropriate for linear rationalization, or science .

Deferred gratification? Deferred gratification or delayed gratification is the ability to wait in order to obtain something that one wants. This ability is usually considered to be a personality trait which is important for life success. It has has suggested that it is an important component of emotional intelligence. People who lack this trait are said to need instant gratification and may suffer from poor impulse control .
