ECE 4300 Homework 7 November 2, 2008 Due: Monday, October 10, in class Problem 1. A cavity is made as shown below. The gain medium is only 2 mm long, positioned in the center of the cavity. The High Reflector has a reflectivity of 99.6%. The output coupler has a reflectivity of 90%. The radius of curvature for both mirrors is R=10 cm. R=10 cm R=10 cm 6 cm 99.6% 90% 2 mm The gain medium has the following properties: λ o =1.5 μ m τ =150 nsec Δν = 25 x 10 12 Hz n = 1.5 99.9% transmission at each face. The crystal is optically pumped by a laser with λ o=1.0 μ m The gain is homogeneously broadened a. What is the threshold gain, γ th for this laser? b. What is the inversion required to create γ th in this laser? c. At threshold pumping, how much power is being emitted into spontaneous emission? d. How much pump power is required to reach threshold? Now assume the laser is pumped hard enough to bring γ o = 3 γ th e. What is the inversion density in the crystal at this pump power. Assume the laser is lasing and the gain is saturated.
