Calculate the transmission of radiation as a function of time for radiation that is resonant with the 0 Æ 2 transition, assuming that the optical source is turned on at time t=0, all atoms are originally on level 0, and that it is a strong field, which means it will pump a significant number of atoms out of level 0 into level 2 within level 2’s lifetime. Assume the absorption cross section is known for this transition, and that 10% of the light gets through the sample at low intensity (before saturation). 2. For the energy level system shown below: 2 1 0 =20 nsec τ 21 τ 1 g=1 g=3 =1 usec R a. Can this be used for a continuous wave laser? b. If R=10 20 cm -3 /sec, what are the equilibrium populations of states 2 and 1? c.
