Cori Breslauer Review for exam 2 – Cell Division (Chapter 9)* Metabolism – Julie Photosynthesis – René DNA Replication – Emily Genetics – Peter The life cycle of the cell involves several states: generation, growth, and replication. A cell spends most of its time not dividing. Any cell in question goes through four states when it is time for it to divide: o Reproductive signal – The cell must be able to know when it is appropriate to divide. o Replication of DNA – Enough genetic material must be made to pass on to the next generation. o Segregation of DNA – Each cell gets half o Cytokinesis (production of new plasma membrane, or in the case of plants, a cell wall, to separate newly formed cells) first, think cyto- link to the word cell, then think of the word genesis here. The ending -esis means something new is forming. So cytokinesis is the step where the two new cells finalize the division process with the formation of a new outside barrier, whether that is a plasma membrane or a cell wall. In prokaryotes, the cellular division process is called fission and is very simple, as its steps match the four above perfectly. o Prokaryotes usually have one circular chromosome That begins replication at the ori (origin) site and ends on the ter (termination) site. Most of the life cycle of the cell is spent in preparation to divide. That is, most of the cell cycle is spent in a state of non-division known as interphase. Interphase can be split up into three parts. In the figure below (fig 1) interphase is the orange stripe and the three parts that make up interphase are in blue, red and green. o The blue stripe represents G 1 , or Gap 1. Two points of interest occur within G 1 . First, a restriction point is reached where a cell makes the final commitment step. In other words, once the cell passes the restriction point of G 1 it will definitely divide. The second point of interest is The G 0 phase. The G 0 phase is kind of like the ugly stepchild of G
