I am the strong willed person I am today because of my parents’ inherent desire to push me to success. They realized that in this world, you must develop a habit of trying your hardest at whatever you do. The three biggest areas that I noticed my parent’s influence helped me succeed were in school, baseball, and my social life. Without their influence, I am sure lethargy would creep into nearly every crevice of my life. One of my favorite verses from the New King James translation of the Bible is Ecclesiastes 9:10. It states, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working, nor planning, nor knowledge, nor wisdom”. This verse sums up the reasoning behind it all. It raises the question as to why it would even cross our minds to slack off now, because we do not have the opportunity to succeed once we are no longer alive. My dad loves to tell me the story of how his father never cared what kind of success he had in school. It was assumed back then that my dad would simply work for the family electrician business, so throughout high school he never made the effort to achieve good grades. He usually “just got by” so that he could continue playing on the football team. It wasn’t until college that he realized how rewarding it can be to apply yourself to your studies, and by that time, it was too late in many respects. This story that he told me probably one hundred times growing up was the main reason behind why it made so much sense to me to apply myself throughout all levels of school. Even now as I continue my educational life at college, what my dad told me is the main driving force behind my desire to excel in school. I am the first of my family to attend a state university. There is a lot of pressure on me to succeed, but I realize that it is justified pressure. My parents have already been though this stage of life and they know better
