History Definitions Thomas Ronan 1. New Frontier a) A new wave of members to a group. b) A new frontier was evident during the time of JFK 2. John F. Kennedy a) He was the youngest man elected to the presidency as well as the youngest to die. b) He took vigorous action in the cause of equal rights, calling for new civil rights legislation. His vision of America extended to the quality of the national culture and the central role of the arts in a vital society. 3. Linden B. Johnson a) Johnson was the only President to take the Oath of Office on an airplane. b) He was also the only President to take it from a woman. 4. Martin Luther King Jr. a) African American Baptist minister, was the main leader of the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950's and 1960's b) He was the cause of the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibited racial discrimination in public places and called for equal opportunity in employment and education. King later received the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize 5. Flexible Response a) Flexible Response was realistic in that nuclear weapons couldn't be used. It tried to provide credible means to match non-nuclear escalation. b) The word "flexible" stressed the value of having "multiple options" available should a crises arise. Having multiple options during a crisis appeared to be better than reference to a few preset war scenarios. 6. NASA a) Agency of the United States government responsible for developing space exploration and research initiatives, as well as coordinating various communications-related projects. b) NASA also administers the space shuttle program and a variety of other endeavors, which include improving the performance of airplanes and rockets (aeronautics), conducting scientific experiments in space, improving data-tracking technology, increasing international alliances for space activities, and establishing partnerships
