Unformatted text preview: Understanding Earth Chapter 20: COASTLINES AND OCEAN BASINS Grotzinger Jordan Press Siever More than half of the global population lives within 60 km of a coast (elevation more significant) Delivery of sediments to the ocean then what? Some possibilities: construction of classic delta (shallow water, low wave energy, etc.) reworking of sediments into other deposits (high energy, etc.) sediments dumped into deep water (edge of continental shelf) Ocean Basins Cover 71% of Earth Underlain by geologically young rocks <180 million years old Bright areas = oceanic crust; Medium gray areas = sediment-covered continental or oceanic crust, i.e. where continental-derived sediments (including chemical seds) are deposited Summary Oceans Waves Tides Beaches Sea-level Shoreline dynamics (typical & atypical) Ocean basins Cross sections of Atlantic and Pacific Features of the deep ocean Patterns of sedimentation Waves Responsible for both deposition & erosion . Waves are created as wind transfers energy to bodies of water. Waves can travel hundreds of kilometers. Coastlines typically irregular always undergoing change Parts of a beach The Surf Zone Transformation to breakers begins where bottom shallows to <the wavelength of the wave....
