Fovea (Latin for pit) The fovea is the area of highest photoreceptor density. There are no blood vessels in the fovea. It is the area of direct gaze and highest visual acuity. All of our detailed vision requires the fovea. The rest of the visual field alerts us to something to be attended to and looked at with our fovea. The fovea is in an area called the “macula lutea”; this is Latin for “yellow spot”.
