SYSC 3600 – Assignment #2 1/. You will recall the following system from question 2 of assignment 1: (a) Remodel the system using state space techniques. Clearly identify your choice of state variables and don°t forget the output equation. (b) Put your equations into matrix form (give A , B , C , and D for the system). Be sure to make clear which of your state variables is x 0 and so on. 2/. Imagine a solenoid connected to a spring (as shown below). When voltage is applied to the solenoid, the solenoid compresses the spring. In practice the solenoid coil has both resistance and inductance. Also the moving portion of the solenoid has mass and there is some friction. Introducing these elements produces the system shown below.

Solenoids are essentially a linear version of a motor. The following equations apply: x k e i k F SOL b SOL & = = Torque is replaced by force, and angular velocity by linear velocity. The constant k SOL is analogous to k t , but has different units.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
