1. What are the dominant strategy-shaping economic characteristics of the digital music player industry (DMPI)? The largest strategy-shaping economic characteristic is the market share and growth rate. In 2006, over 13.6 million digital music players were sold in the U.S. accounting for over $2.5 billion in sales, with only 20% of the U.S. population owning an MP3 player. The future of this industry is still strong as even conservative analysts have described this industry as explosive. Foreign markets are also a force in future market share. As foreign competitors arrive in the market, the doors open to an entire new market that will increase profitability for many already in the market. Another strategy-shaping characteristic is that of the consumer wants and needs. Although Apple has maintained the largest percent of the market, consumers will buy products that are fashionable and have the functionality that they want. Also, technology is a strategy-shaping characteristic in this industry. As new features are introduced, it will be up to the rivals to keep up. The delivery of music is also increasingly changing, such as through on demand music and music sharing features.
