Astronomy- Lecture Notes- January 8thNot all wavelengths of sunlight make it to the surface of earth- the ozone layer blocks out UV waves.Visible light passes through the optical window to reach earth, while radio waves pass through theradio window to make it to earth. All parts of the EM spectrum behave in the same way: they all diffract, interfere with one another andtravel at exactly the same speed. However, different parts of the EM spectrum are used for differentthings- we can look at an object through different parts of the EM spectrum to be able to see muchmore/things we cant see with visible light. We need telescopes that are above the earth’s surface to look at the wavelengths of light that don’tmake it through earth’s atmosphere. The order of the EM spectrum is: radio waves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma rays. This order goes from longest to shortest wavelength which is lowest to highest energy. All objects emit radiation at all times, even humans. All objects release certain wavelengths of radiation
