Inertia When masses in gravity fields and charges in electric field are in a region of space where the fields are negligible (effectively zero), the mass or charges will follow Newton’s 1 st Law of Inertia. The will continue doing what they are doing If they start at rest they will remain at rest. If they are moving at constant velocity they will continue to move at constant velocity. © RHJansen Zero Gravity Field Zero Electric Field m q
Stationary Mass Released in a Gravity Field M M Mass m follows the gravity field generated by mass M . Mass m falls toward mass M . Falling Body or Freefall. m m © RHJansen Mass in a non-uniform radial field Mass in a uniform field

Stationary Charge Released in a Radial Electric Field What is falling in an electric field ? What is up? What is down ? Electric fields can be found in a variety of configurations. The radial gravity field surrounding a planet is similar to the electric field near point charges. However, there are two types of charge. One attracting and the other repelling. + This also means that an electron or a proton can be placed in either of the above fields creating 4 possible scenarios. © RHJansen
Stationary Charge Released in a Radial Electric Field Positive charges follow electric field lines. + © RHJansen + + Negative charges move opposite to the electric field lines. +

Possible Uniform Electric Field Charged plates are the most similar to the uniform gravity field found near the surface of a large mass, like Earth. But, plates can be oriented in different ways, where at the Earth’s surface we only consider an up/down arrangement. + + + + + + + And others, including pointing into and out of this screen. Always think 3D. © RHJansen
Comparing Uniform Fields It might be helpful to define up and down in terms of positive and negative. Electricity follows similar conventions to gravity. + + + + + M Skyward is positive Positive is obvious The ground is negative The negative plate is referred to as the ground in electricity © RHJansen
