911: America can not fight terrorism alone Terrorism= privatization of war -terrorists were dedicated to breaking down American image of power America= only nation since Rome that has loomed so large above the others, but even Rome eventually collapsed -America can not be world’s #1 superpower forever -Japan will soon be #1 -if “America is invincible” mindsets persists dangerous arrogance Perceived enemies/threats to our #1 status: China? China/Russia/India? Europe? Still USA has substantial military backup, most tv/film exports, attracts most foreign students to universities Post Soviet Union: World was NOT uni-polar OR multi-polar -rather 3 dimensional 1. unipolar military of America. (no other country operates on global level as we do) 2. economics are multipolar (US, Europe, and Japan represent 2/3 of world product. Also China is rising to 4 th power) -U.S. must often bargain as equal to Europe 3. widely dispersed transnational relations that cross borders outside gov. control
