Firearms and Homework Assistance Since this Wednesday’s discussion will  primarily be used as a midterm review  (though I’ll also go over this), and many of  you may want to get the homework done  before Wednesday night, I am posting a  quick presentation of firearms, as well as a  few slides with homework assistance.  Have  questions ready for Wednesday’s  discussion section!

Firearms Definition-  A firearm is any instrument or device  assembled from a barrel, action, and from  which a projectile is propelled by the  products of the explosion of gunpowder.

Levels of Identity Class characteristics Measurable feature of a specimen that indicates a restricted  group source (for instance, number of lands and grooves) Result from design factors and determined PRIOR to  manufacture Subclass Characteristics Produced incidental to manufacture (for instance, the machine  carving the barrels getting dented, creating a distinct mark in  the barrel cut from there on out) Significant because they relate to a smaller group source Can arise from a source over time Individual Characteristics Marks produced by random imperfections of irregularities on  tool surfaces (for instance, scratches and imperfections on the  inside of the barrel from repeated use and/or abuse by the  owner) These random imperfections or irregularities are produced  incidental to manufacture and are caused by use, corrosion, or  damage They are unique to that tool and distinguish it from all other  tools
