Name: Ryan Montgomery Due Date: 6/30/09 Date Received:____________ Organic Chemistry Lab Report Form 1. Name of Experiment: Experiment G.1: Distilling a 1-Butanol/Tert-Butyl Alcohol Mixture 2. Purpose of Experiment: To learn how simple distillation can be used to separate two liquids. 3. Balanced Equation(s) for Main Reaction(s) show catalysts, if applicable: 4. Summary of Experimental Procedure: (brief and concise, do not copy from lab manual) Mix 1.25 mL of 1-Butanol with 1.25 mL of Tert-Butyl Alcohol in a 5 mL conical vial. Assemble Hickman Still as it appears in diagrams in lab manual. Slowly heat solution until vapors are observed in the still and begin collecting in the collar of the Hickman Still. Remove, with a disposable pipet, 0.2 mL aliquots as liquid accumulates in the bell of the Hickman still. Place the first 0.2 mL aliquot into a screw cap container (provided by instructor) noting temperature when aliquot is removed. Repeat this procedure except place 0.6 mL (3 x 0.2 mL) into each of the three next vials, noting temperature when each aliquot
